During that chase, police said, the suspected stolen vehicle was involved in an accident near the intersection of Ric Williamson Memorial Highway and US-180. Per the police statement, the driver exited the vehicle once it came to a rest following the accident. Police claim the driver opened fire on officers and troopers who'd been in pursuit. According to the Weatherford Police Department, its officers then returned fire, striking the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
